Stay in EU for Environment Stall
Photos & Press Release
Rich House - 10 Jul 2019
Our stall on Saturday was a great success. A bit of sunshine always brings out visitors to the town. Here are some photos followed by our press release explaining what went on. Our online petition is still open - so please sign it if you haven't already.
Romsey & Southampton North constituents have added their names to a petition calling for their MP Caroline Nokes to use her “influence in the heart of government to ensure we remain in the EU so as to safeguard our environment whatever our future prime ministers’ views and whatever party is in power”.
The petition was organised by Romsey Better in Europe, a local community group campaigning for the UK to remain in Europe. The group held a bustling stall outside The Phoenix on Saturday morning at which passers-by were invited to add their names to the petition. The group collected a total of 125 signatories. Visitors also shared their opinions on the environment using an Enviro-Brexitometer (see photo). Almost all trusted the UK working as part of the EU to look after important aspects of the environment more than a UK that was working on its own.
Rich House who organises the group said, “It is clear that Romsey people value the EU for bringing us cleaner air, cleaner beaches and keeping our bees alive. In an uncertain world with Trump and big businesses resisting action to reduce climate change, we need to stay part of the EU, with its powerful influence on the world stage, to make it happen. We can’t do this on our own”.
Romsey Better in Europe campaigner Sally Yalden added, “We’ve been running various stalls and campaigns in Romsey over the last year and have seen an increase in support for remaining in the EU. No Deal wasn’t an option on the ballot paper in 2016, but we seem to be sleepwalking in that direction”.
Future stalls will focus on the local impact of a No Deal Brexit, as well as the benefits to our NHS and local businesses of remaining in the EU.
The petition, which is still open and available online at the group’s website, will be sent to the MP later this month.
